India post issued a postage stamp featuring The Brihadeeswara temple of Thanjavur.The Brihadeeswara temple is the major center of tourist attraction at Thanjavur. This temple is one of India’s most prized architectural sites. The ‘Vimana’ – or the temple tower – is 216 ft (66 m) high and is among the tallest of its kind in the world.

Thanjavur is the ancient capital of the Chola kings. King Rajaraja Chola constructed the Brihadeeswara Temple in 10th century AD and the architect Sama Varma designed it. Thanjavur was the center of learning during 10th to 14th century AD. The Brihadeeswara temple is one of the few great Indian monuments listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list of historical sites and monuments.

బృహదీశ్వరాలయము - తంజావూరు

రాజరాజ చోళునిచే 1010 లో తంజావూరు లో నిర్మించిన బృహదీశ్వరాలయము కు వెయ్యి సంవత్సరాలు నిండిన సందర్బంగా తపాలా శాఖ 26-09-2010 న ఒక ప్రత్యేక తపాల బిళ్ళను విడుదల చేసింది. మన దేశం లో ఉన్న దేవాలయాలలో అతి పెద్ద గర్బ గుడి ( విమాన గోపురం ) ఉన్న దేవాలయం ఇదే. భూమి నుండి స్తుపి వరకు 66 మీటర్లు ఎత్తుతో ఎంతో అద్బుత శిల్ప కళా సంపదతో అలరారే ఈ దేవాలయం యునెస్కో చే ప్రపంచ వారసత్వ ప్రదేశం గా గుర్తింపబడినది.
